I was able to get away and drink for a tick or so but it was too little too late.

The third game was more of the same. I lasted a little longer and did more LoS but in the end, one Viper shot along with scopid poisons and a Chimera shot and I'm pretty much toast.

I know that Viper is getting nerfed to a % of mana but any suggestions on how to avoid this in it's current state?

Holy PvP Specs

I was thinking about just going some kind of zerg Holy/Ret without any of the -CC talents. -30% on Fear shouldn't matter because Warlocks will get gibbed before they get a Fear off anyway, same goes for curses.

Plus, if I get CC'd, even a 30% shorter fear is still plenty long enough for any team to kill my teammates.

That said, I was thinking 49/0/22 with 5/5 Divine Int and 5/5 Holy Guidance to absolutely maximize healing potential.

Basically, the plan is to judge, heal 'til I think I'd get countered/CC'd, then bubble and spam heals. After bubble's over chances are someone on the other team is dead, and if they're not then I'll have DF+Shock + ~.8s HL etc to fall back on 'til someone does die. 22 in ret is obviously for Divine Purpose so that if a rogue gets on someone I can break them out of kidney and they can truck someone.

I know this all sounds like a highly complex and skillful strategy, so if your feeble brain can't handle all of this technical talk about communication and CC-chains then that's too bad.

Source of the missing judgements

From the EJ forums:

Ghostcrawler: I just tested this with a warrior friend.

100% reproduction using Org heroic training dummy using all 3 judgements:

Warrior puts up Thunderclap.

Just to make things simple, I wait till thunderclap has about 12 seconds left on it.

I cast judgement. Hit successful.

Thunderclap falls off.

8 seconds later

I cast judgement. Nothing happens, no mana, no damage. Judgement goes on cooldown and consumes it's mana cost. Judgement debuff does not refresh.

I wait for cooldown, judgement fails again, just like before.

Judgement debuff, + heart of the crusader fall off the target.

Cast judgement. Judgement successful.

-------------

Debuff's rolling off the target seem to be causing this problem. As new debuffs are applied; they fall off before my judgement does (which it never will unless overwritten by another pally) due it having a 100% uptime at hit cap. Problem is this can cause 2 + judgement failures waiting for the debuff to fall off.

As an earlier poster said, as the judgement debuff moves from position X to Y, is where this bug seems to be happening.

This also explains away the crit relationship theories using hammer of justice. The debuff Hammer of Justice is rolling off before you re-apply your first judgement after casting Hammer of Justice.

EDIT:

It should also be noted, that as long as the judgement debuff maintained it's position on the target, IE keep refreshing Thunderclap, every judgement was successful.

Ret PvP Spec

I'm trying to figure out what will be the best Ret PvP spec and there are a couple talents in my mind that could go either way. If someone else has looked more at a PvE-oriented Glyph set-up feel free to post it.

Link to all Paladin Glyphs:
Major:http://www.wowhead.com/?items=16.2&filter=cr=132;crs=1;crv=0
Minor:http://www.wowhead.com/?items=16.2&filter=cr=132;crs=2;crv=0

Holy PvP:
Major
-Glyph of Hammer of Justice
-Glyph of Seal of Wisdom
-Glyph of Cleansing
Minor
-Glyph of the Wise
-Glyph of Blessing of Wisdom
-Glyph of Blessing of Kings (if you're 51/20; if you're not... uh, may as well have it anyway because none of the others are useful)

*HoJ Glyph is pretty obvious. 1 extra second on our only real CC is pretty nice, specially if you go 51/20 for HoJ cooldown.
*Seal of Wisdom -- reduces mana cost of healing spells by 5% while active. The reason I'd go with this over the Light glyph is because of the minor glyph causing seal of wisdom to cost 50% less mana, so refreshing it over the fight would be less harsh on mana. However, obviously the Seal of Light Glyph would benefit you more vs burst teams, which, in all likelihood, will be more common in early S5. So might swap this with the Seal of Light Glyph, or better yet:
*Glyph of Cleansing - reduces the mana cost of Cleanse by 20%. Pretty nice Glyph for long fights, but if it turns out that burst teams are the more common flavor early on, I'll probably swap this with a Seal of Light Glyph so I have both important Seal Glyphs depending on what type of team comes out of the gate.
*Minors -- you don't have much variety, so really there's not anything to justify.

I'll add other stuff later

Judgement of Wisdom

Has anyone seen numbers on this? I know it returns 1% of max mana to the attacker but is it ppm or % chance on hit? And what's the value? Thanks.

I'm trying to make a hunter dps spreadsheet that also accounts for time in and out of aspect of the viper, so I'd like to get an accurate picture of mana regen. I'd assume a minimum of 53 in Holy for all the PvE goodies, then probably Imp. Devo?

Ret PvP - 0/18/53
Seems pretty obvious. 20s HoJ is amazing, then dump the rest in Ret. Might move some things around depending on changes and how big of an effect resilience plays (i.e. I don't really know how good RV is going to be compared to some points in 2H spec or whatever)

Prot - No idea, never played with Prot and have basically no experience tanking anything significant as a Paladin

You wanted it, you got it!

Yeah, we were OP. I'm not too worried about the changes and I think it will help normalize Ret a bit but I'm sure the noobs will still QQ (on both sides)

Blue Post from Ghostcrawler:

Hello paladins,

Sorry we didn't get a chance to pre-announce these changes before the data were pushed to the beta. I won't try to sugarcoat it -- these are nerfs.

As I tried to explain before, we concluded a couple of weeks ago that Retribution was doing too much damage in PvP. We tried to nerf the burst damage through the previous changes to Divine Storm etc. Unfortunately, those changes didn't prove sufficient. Not only were paladins still destroying other classes in PvP, but we also found their PvE damage, even at level 80, was too high. Many classes were concluding they were too weak based on comparing their numbers to paladin numbers (and to be fair, hunters and in some cases mages and warriors).

Here are the new changes:

1) Judgements of the Wise: Mana gained reduced from 33% to 15% of base mana. We spent many hours arriving at this number. For example, we did a lot of Patchwerk fights, watching the mana bar to see when and if it ever went down. In BGs, we were seeing paladins able to go from target to target without pausing even when unleashing all of their attacks. While we don't want you to go OOM in a few seconds, we don't want you to ignore the mana bar either. Mana is not rage -- warriors can't typically start a battle with a full bar.

2) Judgement of Wisdom: mana gained reduced to 1% of maximum mana and proc frequency cut by 50%. This ability was flat out better than Vampiric Touch when the mana provided between the two really needs to be close in order for the decision between Shadow priest and Retribution paladin to be a real one.

3) Judgement and Seals: Damage reduced by 20%. This is the major damage adjustment -- a lot of damage was coming from these. We do realize this hurts Holy and Protection as well, and that is something for which we are prepared to offer compensation (particularly if it hurts Protection's threat generation).

4) Hammer of Wrath: Now can’t be used until the target is below 20% health. Our rule of thumb is that core "Execute-style" abilities work at 20% and talented abilities work at 35% health. We originally had Hammer at 35% based on some other limitations of the spell.

5) Art of War: Increased damage bonus to Judgements, Crusader Strike, and Divine Storm. I'll report back on the exact numbers here when we've settled on them.

I also want to add that the token Blessing of Might change wasn't intended as a joke -- it is designed so that Battle Shouts won't cancel the longer and more expensive Blessing of Might in a group setting.

These seem like pretty severe nerfs, but that was the intention. It is difficult for some players to ever be truly objective with issues surrounding their class, but in this case we felt Ret was severely overpowered. This was not in the realm of small tweaks to fix (though we did try originally). We overhauled the paladin class for Lich King, so it is unfortunate but not too surprising that the numbers for the dps spec require a lot of iteration. The mistake is ours, not the fault of the player base or beta testers.

Nerfing a spec or class is never fun. It means that our initial estimates of numbers were off and we know that the community is going to react negatively (to put it mildly). But we have to try and keep the game in a relatively balanced state and that is going to mean making decisions that are unpopular sometimes. If you need to blame someone for the nerfs, blame me.

As always, if we over-compensated, we'll adjust the numbers again. But as I said, our initial round of nerfs wasn't sufficient. Lest you fear that Lich King is upon as and you won't see any additional changes, that is not our point of view. We changed a lot in the game and we need to be able to rectify problems. I would expect early patches or even hotfixes to deal with class or balance problems, and hopefully these will slow down as we get closer to major content releases. But nothing is off the table after we ship, down to rearchitecting talent trees if we think that is called for. This isn't to suggest we aren't happy with the state of the game. Rather, my word that we will continue to iterate on problem areas as they come up.

I also want to stress that we do not make balance decisions based on the QQ of other classes. At most, if there is a pretty vocal outcry that will encourage us to rerun the numbers to see if something is amiss. As vocal, and sometimes passionate and even logical as forum posts can be, they represent a fraction of the entire fanbase and it would be foolish for us to clobber one group of players solely based on the whining from another group.

Go ahead and vent if you have to. We won't delete posts or ban posters in this thread unless they are overly offensive. We do ask that you not launch a thousand other threads so that other paladin issues can still be discussed. Likewise, we have no problem with other classes engaging in the discussion but outright gloating or trolling will be frowned upon.

And I do apologize for putting you through this.

Pally changes!

We all knew they were coming.

Among them:
"The Art of War now increases the damage of Judgement, Crusader Strike and Divine Storm by 5/10%. (Old - Increased critical strike damage only, by 10/20%)"

Wouldn't this cause the same amount of crit damage, but also increase non-crit damage? On a crit, 10% added to the overall amount will be equal in amount to a 20% increase in bonus damage. This must be worded wrong; it's not what they said before at least.

"Judgement of the Wise now grants the paladin 15% of his base mana. (Down from 33%)"

This talent will be hell to balance. Right now a paladin can spam whatever he wants and not worry. The original blue post can be found here: http://blue.mmo-champion.com/5/10544534810-not-possible-to-leave-ret-paladin-feedback.html

"Ret should be as close to the top as anyone else. Our buckets at this point are basically DPS, Tanks, Healers. When the tank and healer are doing dps, it's even closer. You may be a couple hundred dps lower than a pure dps class (hunter, mage, warlock, rogue) but for most players, the numbers will be close enough that a raid with a good Retadin and an okay rogue will see Ret on top.

This is a change in philosophy from the BC era, where we would engineer hybrid classes to be 25% to 30% and sometimes much lower than dps classes.

If there are dps differences, it's going to take a very, very skilled guild to be able to accuately decipher them. That is because a boss is not a training dummy. For almost all of us, it's going to be impossible to tell whether the rogue doing 2500 dps and the paladin doing 2300 dps is because of the class or the player. And it is likely to be a different number on the very next boss.

We're trying to hedge out bets and NOT promise that every class will do 2500 dps in all cases, because that just won't happen. There are too many other variables. But you won't be far below other classes... as you often were in BC and Classic WoW."

Wotlk Paladin Talent Calculator

http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?paladin=052320510033310302134231351000000000000000000000000000050000000000000000000000

That will be my spec come next patch. (this is the naxx libram, if you only have the blessed book of nagrand there is a code change you need to make listed in the "Notes.txt" file)
-Uses Libram of the Lightbringer whenever you cast HL.
-Uses Libram of Souls Redeemed if you cast HL and your target has Blessing of Light.
-Uses Libram of Mending (20 heroic badges, go buy it if you try this mod and like it) if you cast HL and you don't have the mp5 buff from the libram active.

This mod effectively gives you an extra +20ish mp5 and +40ish healing as a paladin.

Type "/lm on" or "/lm off" for the obvious effects.

Yes, I stole a large amount (most) of the code from elsewhere, but that code already worked sort of well, so it seemed like a good idea.

things I will add at some time:
-rank detection for HL so that if you cast rank 1 HL with less than 10 seconds left on the mending buff, it uses Libram of Mending
-arena reward libram integration for an "arena" mode
-automatic libram switchback if you were doing a job other than healing (and thus had on a more appropriate libram), so that you get the correct healing libram on, and then go back to your last libram (currently you should simply disable the mod while dpsing/tanking by typing "/lm off")

Palatankadins

so, i was thinking, how could i maximize my tanking to the most complete of their abilities?

so i rolled a paladin, no no, i joke, but if i were to spec "just" to tank (which my current spec is more for solo play, and group play as a healer/tank hybrid)

but this spec is what i would do given a world where i was only intended to tank, please tell me what you think, and i would love suggestions,

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/paladin/talents.html?0505000000000000000005305133000001522215510520000000000000000000

got my new paly need help ;S

ok its the first time i play a paly.
id like some advice of how to play it and what to do whit all those jugement and seal... I wanted a build that would not hinder raid healing while at the same time allow me to still do decent dps for farming and grinding etc. There were a couple talents I just did not want to give up. The two most important were divine favor & illumination. IMO those are the two most essential talents for any decent paladin. The other one was Holy shock.

A few key notes about the build ....

1) No seal of command. With 5/5 in Imp Seal of Righteousness, Judgement of the Crusader on the mob, and my current spell power gear my SOR is hitting mobs for about 330-340 damage on every swing. This is about 560-660 non-crit combined on every swing using my Herald of Woe when fighting the lvl 57 elite plate dragonkin in BS. Every 6 seconds I also judge Seal of Righteousness for 680-690 non crit and 900-1000 crit (doesnt matter if the target is stunned or not unlike SOC.) Against the caster type 58 elite dragonkin I am hitting for a combined 750-800 non-crit with SOR.

2) Light's Grace and Divine Illumination. With 3/3 in Light's Grace, after my first Holy Light every other Holy Light within 15 secs has .5 seconds taken off it's cast time. Pop Divine Illumination and those Holy Lights cost half mana for 10 seconds. At first I wasn't too excited about these two talents since normaly all I do is cast Flash of Light but with these two talents used together you can do some pretty nice mana-effecient healing. Escpecially usefull in boss fights when they enrage, etc.

3) Holy Guidance. 35% of your total intellect is converted to Spell Damage and Healing. Nuff said, this talent rocks for all situations.

I'll post some screenshots later on showing some combat logs so you get a better feel for the damage and healing, I'm at work and dont have much time. We discussed a number of items which were gathered directly from this forum over the last few weeks. Right now, the Mage review is taking precedence, however, once those changes are locked down their time will free up and they'll be able to focus more closely on improving certain aspects of your class.

I don't really have anything new to say, only to reiterate that the plan moving forward is still to take another pass at the Protection tree, to ensure that it's as attractive as we intend. As I've also stated we plan to explore ways in which we can improve the Paladin's overall interactivity in raids, as well as tank.

There are likely some other tweaks on the horizon (likely a couple each patch).

I'll post information as soon as it becomes available.
